26、 Parrots have been known to mimic words, but have you ever thought how they communicate? The sounds they make may sound meaningless to us, but new research has found that wild parrots are actually given names by their parents.
According to a study led by Karl Berg of Cornell University in the US, nestlings (雏鸟) are given a unique sound of their own, which stays with them for their entire lives.
In the study, the team placed hidden cameras in the nests of 17 different wild parrots. After studying their sounds, the team found slight differences in the calls parents used to communicate with each chick. And even before the nestlings had learned to communicate properly, the baby birds seemed to recognize and mimic their calls.
Sounds very similar to humans, doesn't it?
The study also proved that these signature calls are acquired socially not genetically. To do this, scientists switched the eggs in nine of the 17 nests, so that half of the parrots were raising nestlings that were not theirs. Using the recordings, the scientists concluded the nestlings all used names similar to those the parents (whether biological or nonbiological) called them for the first weeks of their lives. Lucie McNeil, from National Geographic, said, “this would be the first proven example of a non- human species teaching acoustical(声学的)communication.”
Lead scientist for the study, Karl Berg told National Public Radio of the US, “Most people say, ‘Well, all those calls are just noise’, but I think they're having conversations.”
When asked what else the parrots might be saying, Berg replied, “The theory is that these birds are deciding where the food is.” “Do we want to go 3 km North-northwest?” “Do we want to go to that field?’ They are sort of arguing or discussing.” Natural science author, Virginia Morell wrote: “Very gradually, scientists are learning to understand the conversations of very different animals that live lives rich with plans, quarrels and romance.”
You never know, if the science of animal translation keeps advancing, we might one day be watching a reality series about parrots.
【1】What did the new research find about wild parrots?
A. They can talk by learning from people.
B. The sounds they make are meaningless.
C. They have names given by their parents.

27、Time and money are life's most valuable resources. One of the great laws of economics is that time equals money. The phrase “time is money“ is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay, Advice to a Young Tradesman, 1748.【1】 He encouraged people to treat time like money. However, most people think about time and money in vastly different ways.
【2】 Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time. In a world of scarcity, choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.
The value of time varies from person to person. Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their household chores. 【3】
Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time. 【4】 You can’t bottle time and exchange it for an object or event. However, when people are made aware of their mortality they wonder if they did make the most of their lives.
In sum, time is anything but free. As a non-renewable resource, time is quite expensive. 【5】 Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new? Skills and knowledge take time, so the more time you spend on them, the more you improve.
A.Time is our scarcest resource.
B.It means time is a valuable resource.
C.However, it cannot be bought at any price.
D.Time moves on whether we choose to spend it or not
E.Actually, time and money are greatly different from each other.
F.However, a non-working person may spend more time on household chores.
G.Knowing that time is limited encourages us to ask how we are using our time.

29、 As doctors and nurses struggle for medical supplies to fight the coronavirus pandemic, help is coming from an unlikely place – high school students.
The Career Technical Education Charter (CTEC) High School, US, has been utilizing (利用) its nine 3D printers to make face shields (防护面罩) for healthcare workers on the frontline.
Face masks have been particularly challenging to find across the US since the outbreak. Gavin Newsom, Governor of the State of California, announced recently that the state is set to spend $1 billion (about 7 billion yuan) to purchase 200 million masks each month to boost its supply.
Valerie Castro, 16, a CTEC sophomore, is part of a team of teachers and students who came up with design tweaks (改进) that cut almost 30 minutes off the time it takes to build a face shield.
“That’s what makes this school kind of different,” she said. “Even though all these bad things are happening, we’re able to make an impact positively. It’s like leaving your little mark on the world.”
Makerbot, a New York-based company that makes 3D printers, has also helped CTEC to maximize the building process.
They’ve been churning out (大量生产) nearly 100 shields each day, and that production rate is set to triple as 20 more 3D printers come online at the school.
CTEC staff and students have provided masks to hospitals, dentists, urgent care centers and retirement homes in Fresno County and the surrounding areas in California.
“I was shocked,” Stacy Vohra told school staff in a video. “We were so thrilled to have the donation from CTEC. This is something that we’ve been needing.”
The entire staff has switched from daily teaching to face shield production, said Jonathan Delano, director of CTEC.
When the new 3D printers arrive, some of them will go to students’ houses so kids can help with the hands-on process, Delano said.
“That’s how we get through these things,” Delano said. “Our high school focuses on giving back to the community. Students should know the skills they hold can have an impact on a community.”
【1】What sets The Career Technical Education Charter High School apart, according to Castro?
A.They joined healthcare workers on the frontline.
B.They donated about 200 million masks in a month.
C.They designed a more protective face shield.
D.They made a difference in such difficult times.
【2】According to Paragraph 7, what will happen when they triple their production rate?
A.They will get 20 more 3D printers from Makerbot.
B.They will produce a face shield in less than 30 minutes.
C.They will be able to produce about 300 face shields every day.
D.They will start to sell their face shields on their school’s website.
【3】What does Delano think of CTEC’s face shield production?
A.It has boosted the supply of masks in Los Angeles.
B.It has interrupted the school’s daily teaching.
C.It reminds the students of the value of their skills.
D.It challenges students to handle 3D printers by themselves.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Teenagers helping design and produce face masks.
B.3D printing technology being used to produce face masks.
C.Donations from high schools to fight the pandemic.
D.A high school making contributions by producing face shields.

Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 【2】 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 【3】 petrol-driven vehicle.
The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone — two important 【4】 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.
It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 【5】. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 【6】 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.
Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often 【7】 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 【8】. Diesel cars are also more 【9】 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.
Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 【10】 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

Four teams of mountaineers set out on a race to conquer (征服) an unclimbed mountain peak in the Himalayas. The Canadian team chose a long, but safe route, while the British, Chinese and Russian teams chose a faster but steep and dangerous route up the mountain.
When night fell, the teams made camp on the mountainside. But the next morning, the sun rapidly rose air temperature and the strong wind caused a heavy snowfall, which led to a terrible avalanche. The disaster struck and some members of the British, Chinese and Russian teams were swept away and killed. But the Canadians didn’t know what had happened.
It was an hour after the disaster and there was no hope of finding any survivors. The leaders of the British, Chinese and Russian teams, met to discuss how to successfully keep all the survivors alive.
| Britain | Russia | China |
Members | 3 | 2 | 2 |
Tents | 1 two-man | None | 1 four-man |
Sleeping bags | 3 | 2 | 2 |
Rope | 25 metres | 50 metres | None |
Food | 1 person for 3 days | 2 people for 4 days | 2 people for 2 days |
Medicine | None | None | None |
The table above was a summary of what they could collect. The leaders made a final decision that they had to find a way to conquer the mountain and put their flags on the peak.
