  • 26、Smart cities promise to bring better lives, faster transport, cleaner air and lower crime, all through the intelligent use of connected technology, said experts, and after huge investment in the field, China is leading the way.

“China’s smart cities market increases about 30 percent year-on-year in 2018, and all the provinces have begun development and construction for smart cities, with more to follow,” said an expert.

“Although most cities have started a smart city project, there is no globally unified thinking on the concept and operation of smart cities,” said Franco.

Alibaba is now involved in dozens of pilot projects across China, with its open AI (人工智能) platform Tianqing for the ET City Brain system officially launched in September. Set up by its cloud computing subsidiary (子公司), the Brain looks to make the city “think” through AI and cloud computing technologies, and help make the best of public services in real time.

Since introducing the technology, Hangzhou’s traffic jam has fallen from the fifth-worst in China in 2016, all the way to 57th place this year. “Now our experiments are mostly for government use, but we truly expect our open AI platform to enter more areas and help citizens live, work and entertain better,” said Hua.

In McKinsey Global Institute recent report Smart cities: Digital solutions for a more livable future, they find cities can use smart technologies to improve some key quality life by 10 to 30 percent — numbers that translate into lives saved, fewer crime incidents, a reduced health burden, and carbon emissions.

B.the city has become more intelligent

C.its public services have greatly improved

D.it has made achievements in smart city construction

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Smart Cities are on the Way

B.Outline of the Future Smart Cities

    C.Hangzhou’s Construction of Smart Cities

  • 27、   Being in the midst of a pandemic lockdown can make people feel worried. But nothing has shown this panicky behavior more than storing specifically toilet paper.

Seemingly transcending borders and cultures, people from all over the world, including the US, UK and Japan, have been clearing supermarket shelves mainly for this necessity. But what’s the reason for this sudden toilet paper storing? You can understand panic buying food, but do we really need that much toilet paper?

Steven Taylor, author of the book The Psychology of Pandemics, told the Independent that our toilet paper storing is a product of our disgust. During a pandemic, people’s sensitivity to disgust increases, like when you move aside if someone nearby sneezes.

“Disgust is like an alarm … and what better tool for removing disgusting material than toilet paper. I think this is how it became a conditioned symbol of safety,” he said.

Writing for The Conversation, Niki Edwards of The Queensland University of Technology said, “When people hear about the novel coronavirus, they are afraid of losing control. And toilet paper feels like a way to maintain control over health and cleanliness.”

Another one of the most important reasons behind this toilet paper trend, according to the BBC, is the snowball effect. Due to its reports, both in the news and social media, people naturally ask, “Will there be enough toilet paper for my family and me?” This leads to more people following the crowd and buying toilet paper because of their fear of missing out.

“Fear spreads easily. So when you see people around you buying things in a panicky way, it’s going to make you feel more anxious,” wrote American psychologist Baruch Fischhoff for CNBC.

While there are, of course, selfish people who store just because they can, it’s worth keeping things in perspective. Remember, just as countries are cooperating to find a vaccine, we must cooperate to ensure that everyone has their share of necessities.

1The underlined word “transcending” in the second paragraph probably means “____”.

    A.going beyond B.connecting with

C.getting an understanding of D.making good use of

2According to Dr Steven Taylor, what does this toilet paper trend result from?

A.The desire to get rid of disgusting material. B.The fear of losing control over cleanliness.

C.The frequent reporting on toilet paper. D.The selfish side of human nature.

3Whose words are quoted to explain “the snowball effect”?

    A.Steven Taylor’s B.Niki Edwards’

    C.Baruch Fischhoff ‘s D.The author’s

4What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

A.To explore the bad effects of the toilet paper trend.

B.To explain why people tend to store pile toilet paper.

C.To criticize those people who store toilet paper.

D.To discuss people’s different attitudes toward the toilet paper trend.

5Which of the following statement do you think the author will probably NOT agree with?

A.The toilet paper storing can relieve people’s anxiety.

B.It’s selfish of those to store too much toilet paper than they need.

    C.Panic buying is quite understandable.

D.It’s better for us to stay calm and reasonable so as not to follow the toilet paper trend.

Researchers have used high technology methods to learn secrets about a famous painting Girl with Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer is considered one of the masters of art in the 1600s. The researchers’ tests haven’t discovered the identity of the mysterious girl in the painting. But they have found out important information about how Vermeer did the painting.

A careful examination of very small pieces of paint showed where some of the painting’s pigments (颜料) came from. The white that helps form the earring comes from lead from the Peak District in northern England. The blue is made from a valuable stone found in Afghanistan. The red is made from insects that live on cactus plants in Mexico and South America.

Abbie Vandivere was leader of the research project. She expressed surprise that Vermeer used so much blue in the painting, noting, “This blue pigment was more valuable than gold in the 17th century.” Vermeer, however, didn’t have to travel the world to get his materials. He most likely bought them in his hometown of Delft.

“The research findings don’t just show details about Vermeer’s materials,” said Vandivere, “but also tell us about world trade in the 17th century.” The research also uncovered the order in which Vermeer painted the girl on a piece of cloth. Infrared imaging (红外成像) showed that Vermeer began making the work using brown and black paint. He then drew the girl’s outline in black lines before working from the green background to the foreground.

A statement on the museum’s website describes the woman as imaginary. “The painting is not a portrait (肖像), but a painting of an imaginary figure,” the website says.

    1What have the researchers found?

A.A master of art of the 17th century.

B.The way Vermeer drew the painting.

C.The identity of the girl in the painting.

D.A famous painting by Johannes Vermeer.

2Where was the white paint produced?

    A.In England. B.In Afghanistan. C.In Mexico. D.In America.

    3Why was Abbie surprised?

A.The painting was in good condition.

    B.Vermeer bought the paints abroad.

C.The blue pigment was more valuable than gold.

D.Valuable blue pigment was used a lot in the painting.

4What’s the best title for the text?

A.High Technology Used to Test Paintings

B.Steps to Paint Girl with a Pearl Earring

C.Secrets of a Famous Painting Discovered

D.A Famous Painter Named Johannes Vermeer

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.

It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He’d return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? “He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others,” said his mother, Cortney Lewis. “That really hurt him.” Lewis admitted she didn’t know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son’s questions when she had never found those answers herself ?

A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth-grader from Washington middle school, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet star after posting videos of his slam dunk (扣篮), and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in to see Trashaun on TV, too.

He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.

“Cool,” Jayce remembered thinking with excitement. “ I saw him dunking on TV.”

Willis’ story blew up last winter. The Des Moines Register wrote about him. NBC Nightly News flew to Iowa to interview him. Just recently, Sports Illustrated named him one of its Sports Kid of the Year finalists.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he’d see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence. A few days later, the good news that Trashaun accepted the invitation to meet Jayce came.
