  • 27、   I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable and friendly.

However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.

I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand. On a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence, sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat ---- it had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine (真诚的) mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to interrupt someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

1What do we know about the occupants when the author was travelling in Italy?

    A. They were all on the side of the gentleman.

    B. They all laughed at the author for his mistake.

    C. They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public

    D. They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.

2How does the author finally believe the Italian people are?

    A. Cold. B. Rude C. Helpful. D. Hospitable.

3Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph?

    A. They were too tired to speak to anyone.

    B. They were all strangers to each other.

    C. Privacy was a valued tradition in England.

    D. Everybody was deeply lost in though.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Different Ways of Hospitality and Politeness

    B. Co-understanding Each Other

    C. My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad

    D. The Importance of Privacy

  • 28、   Basic to any understanding of Canada in 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s impressive population growth. In September 1966 Canada’s population passed the 20 million mark. Most of this growth came from natural increase. The depression of the 1930’s and the war had held back marriages and the catching - up process began after 1945. The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950’s, producing a population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from 1951 to 1956. Undoubtedly, the good economic conditions of the 1950’s supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived (源自) from a trend toward earlier marriages and an increase in the average size of families. In 1957 the Canadian birth rate stood at 28 per thousand, one of the highest in the world.

After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline. It continued falling until in 1966 it stood at the lowest level in 25 years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian society. Young people were staying at school longer, more women were working, young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before starting families, rising living standards were cutting down the size of families. It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.

Although the growth in Canada’s population had slowed down by 1966 (the increase in the first half of the 1960’s was only nine percent), another large population wave was coming over the horizon. It would be composed of the children who were born during the period of the high birth rate before 1957.

1From paragraph 1 we know that in Canada during the 1950 ________.

A.Fewer people married. B.The birth rate was very high.

C.Economic conditions were poor. D.The population decreased rapidly.

2Which is not the cause of declines in population growth after 1957?

A.Couples buying houses. B.Better standards of living.

C.People getting married earlier. D.People being better educated.

3What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Nine percent. B.Population wave.

C.The first half of the 1960’s. D.Population’s slowing down.

4What does the passage mainly discuss?

    A.Educational changes in Canadian society.

B.Canada during the Second World War.

    C.Population trends in postwar Canada.

    D.Standards of living in Canada.

  • 29、The regulators at America’s Food and Drug Administration(FDA) could be forgiven for wanting a cigarette break. They rushed to meet a September 9th deadline to decide whether more than 6.5m e-cigarette products made by over 500 companies can remain on the market.

E-cigarettes have attracted keen government attention in recent years. More and more young people begin vaping. In 2019 America’s surgeon-general called vaping an epidemic among you people, animadverting in particular products with “kid-friendly” flavours, such as oranges and grapes. Later that year more than 450 people in America suffered from a mysterious and severe lung illness that was linked to vaping.

Other countries, including Brazil, India and Singapore, have already banned e-cigarettes. So what goes into them, and how bad are they really?

The devices use an electric charge to vaporise a dose of nicotine(accompanied, often, by various flavouring chemicals). Nitrosamines, a family of chemicals causing cancers, have been found in e-cigarette vapour. Metallic particles from the device’s heating element, such as nickel and cadmium, are also a concern. High exposure to these can increase the risk of cancer. It also contains harmful substances that can damage tissue or DNA, and which are thought to come mostly from flavourings.

Then there is nicotine. Besides being addictive, it is known to have a harmful effect all around the body. Scientists have done research on animals and humans, which suggests that exposure to nicotine at an early age could make users more influenced to other addictive substances later in life.

【1】What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Praising.

    B.Consuming.

    C.Criticising.

    D.Sponsoring.

【2】Nitrosamines will arise in the course of ________.

    A.charging the device

    B.vaporising nicotine

    C.heating the elements

    D.adding flavouring chemicals

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Nicotine does more harm to animals.

B.Intake of nicotine increases when users grow up.

C.Other addictive substances will influence young users.

D.Kids exposed to nicotine are more likely to be addicts later on.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.How Are E-cigarettes Bad for You?

B.The Ban to Stop Producing E-cigarettes

C.The Necessary Components of the E-cigarettes

D.Why Are E-cigarettes Popular among the Young?

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

  • 38、   Everyone in our neighborhood knew who Ugly was. Ugly was a wild cat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. All these things had their effect on Ugly. He had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot broke at one time, making him look like he was always turning the comer. Every time some one saw Ugly there was the same reaction. “That's one UGLY cat!”

All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, shouted at him, watered him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you watered him, he would stand there, getting wet all over until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would lie down crying for forgive ness. Whenever he saw children, he would come running, meowing, and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him up he would immediately suck (吮吸) on your shirt, hat, whatever he could find.

One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly injured. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was obvious Ugly's life was almost at an end. Ugly lay in a wet circle. He was bleeding badly. As I picked him up in my arms and tried to carry him home, I could hear him crying and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting terribly, I thought.

Then I felt a familiar sucking on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suck my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly cat was asking only for a little love.

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf. She showed me stitches (针) and gave me her half done project.

I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse sill, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was ! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.
