二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to cool it down a bit before drinking.

Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65°C, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70 or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America.

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages(饮料)at very high temperatures.

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature greatly. However, tea-drinkers in Iran often enjoy their beverages at temperatures close to 70.

The researchers found that South Americans not only drink their very hot beverages, they also drink them through a metal straw. This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic(致癌的). The WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink.

The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drink itself, that appears to be responsible.

1What might be the cause of esophageal cancer in developed countries?

    A.Smoking. B.Alcoholic drinks.

    C.Unhealthy vegetables. D.Hot drinks.

2Where do tea-drinkers liking adding milk come from?

    A.China. B.Iran.

    C.The United States. D.South Africa.

3What does the underlined word “scalding” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Sweet. B.Cold.

    C.Hot. D.Tasteless.

4What can be learned from the passage?

A.Once the WHO thought coffee would cause cancer.

B.Drinks below 60 can cause esophageal cancer.

C.The temperature of the drink should not be the cause of cancer.

D.Drinking milk is a much healthier way to keep away from cancer.

  • 27、Self—talk helps us all

Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. If you've ever been overheard criticizing yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a speech, you'll know the social problems it can cause. 【1】 Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is valuable. Far from being a sign of madness, self—talk allows us to plan what wea re going to do, manage our activities and control our emotions.

Psychologists call self—talk private speech—language that is spoken out loud but directed at yourself. We do a lot of it when we are young. As children, we use private speech to control our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. 【2】

Psychological experiments have shown that dais so—called inner speech can improve our performance in tasks like telling what other people are thinking. One recent study suggests that self—talk is the most effective when we talk to ourselves in the second person: as "you" rather than "I".

We keep the private speech we use as children inside—but we never truly put away the out—loud version._ 【3】 You're sure to see an athlete shouting at himself or herself.

【4】 Heating different points of view means our thoughts can end up in different places, leading to a solution to a problem, just like a regular dialogue, and might turn out to be one of the keys to human creativity.

Both kinds of self—talk—silent and out loud—seem to bring many different benefits to our thinking. 【5】

A.But there's no need for embarrassment.

B.If you want proof, turn on a sports channel.

C.As we grow older, we keep this system inside.

D.Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with toys.

E.Words to the self, spoken silently or aloud, are so much more than just chatter.

F.According to the well—known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.

G.Self—talk seems to be a very good way of solving problems and working through ideas.

  • 28、   When Denis wants to relax at work, he steps into a quiet room, sits in a chair, slips on a virtual-reality headset, and escapes to the beach. For Denis, that moment is a tool he relies on regularly to both relieve and prevent stress.

He's not the only one at his company to use the room, where workers can also use a headset to watch a moon walk, take a virtual roller-coaster ride or access a meditation (冥 想)app.

Research shows VR can help reduce pain and anxiety. But it's not yet clear why it works. Experts believe it's related to the technology's power to distract.

“Whatever their problems are, whatever their stresses are, they can leave reality and have a different emotional mood," Denis said.

Virtual-reality headsets haven't taken off with consumers, but they're now powerful and inexpensive enough for companies to consider investing in them to help make workers and customers happier.

The headsets may help people take a virtual break from their surroundings, but there are challenges to consider. Ramon Llamas, a tech-market researcher, noted that there could be challenges in handing out headsets. Some people get sick or dizzy while using virtual reality, and the headsets may get dirty or broken. There's also the task of quickly familiarizing people with using the headsets, especially since VR adoption has been so limited and the ways they are controlled can vary.

For now, Llamas said, he's concerned about privacy and security. What if, for example, someone manages to hack into a headset and insert some content into what you' re watching?

Another potential issue is the management of the headsets and software that goes along with them. This is likely not a complication for an office like Umber Realty's, where people can simply take a headset off if they feel something wrong. But it could be more of a problem if you're stuck in a dentist's chair. “The last thing you want is that in the middle of pulling a tooth something goes wrong," Llamas said.

1What does Denis's company use Virtual Reality for?

    A.Improving the customers' experience.

B.Showing the schedule of his company.

    C.Relieving pressure of the staff.

    D.Saving the trouble of transportation.

2How can the VR devices help the users by Denis?

A.Escaping from reality for the moment. B.Improving their thinking ability.

C.Designing work for the company. D.Investing in a new industry.

3What problems is VR likely to have according to Ramon Llamas?

A.Some hackers will surely endanger users' health.

B.It is hard for users to recognize familiar people.

C.The company may have difficulty storing these devices.

D.Some users may feel uncomfortable when using it.

4Why does the author mention “pulling a tooth" in the last paragraph?

A.To advise people to make use of VR widely.

B.To prove one of the potential problems of VR.

C.To prevent all patients from using VR.

D.To help dentists to repair teeth with VR.

  • 29、   Have you ever wanted to feel like you were in a western film? Or maybe you wanted to feel like you were a pioneer traveling the west? It is possible to experience such things during a Wild West vacation! Here are four of the best Wild West vacation locations available:

Walk the Lewis and Clark Trail

Walk some or all of the 3,700 miles trail that was traversed by Mariwether Lewis and William Clark, two of the world's greatest explorers. Though not all the trails are marked, there are various stops that have been preserved by various historic societies. There is also a coach (长途客车)that makes a 16-day trek following the trail. This begins in St. Louis, Missouri, and ends in Astoria, Oregon.

    Venture Route 66

Take a tour or go to see it yourself-ride on the famous Route 66. The road is nearly 2, 500 miles long. Harley Davidson offers motorcycle tours that last two weeks. Route 66 will provide an experience that may only be found on the open road. The historic road is still well taken care of.

    Visit the Grand Canyon

Visit the most immense (巨大的)canyon in the world, located in Northern Arizona. Raft down the Colorado River, or hike the various trails that run throughout the canyon. If walking is not your thing, there are donkey and horse riding adventures available. In addition, there are motorized boats that float down through the canyon in a week's time.

    Visit Deadwood

Located in South Dakota, Deadwood is a historic landmark. It is the kind of town that comes to mind when one thinks of an old western film. Actors who act as gunslingers (杀手)will often be seen in the streets playing their roles. Winter activities are popular in this old town, and there is always something to do.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” she instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.

Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan, an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, “Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.

After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board. The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.

The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed.
