二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、My aunt Cindy has her own cake shop. She can make nice cakes for special occasions, such as weddings. I spent a week last summer helping her in the shop. Making a nice cake is harder than I thought it would be.

I practised for hours in Aunt Cindy’s shop. I made little colored dots (圆点) on a piece of wax paper (蜡纸). Unluckily, I could not get the dots to be the same shape or size.

I decided to take a break from making the dots, so I helped move cakes. However, that was not easy for me, either. I dropped a cake when trying to take it out of the freezer (冰箱) by myself. Luckily one of Aunt Cindy’s assistants was there. He saved the cake from hitting the floor.

It takes a whole team to make a huge cake. That’s one of the most important things I learned. Each person on the team has to be great at his or her job. Aunt Cindy designs the cakes on paper, Larry does the mixing and baking, and assistants carve and put frosting on the cakes. Aunt Cindy and Larry do most of the decorating while the assistants help make small parts like flowers and figures. Building a big cake is like playing a team sport. If one person doesn’t do his or her job well, the whole team pays for that.

Even though I was not much help to my aunt, I’m glad I spent the week in Aunt Cindy’s shop. Designing cakes takes more than just baking skills. It takes art and painting skills too. Now when I see a really nice cake, I don’t think of eating it first. Instead, I look at it and wonder how many hours it took to make.

【1】Why did the writer take a break from putting colored dots on wax paper?

A.Because Aunt Cindy did not want her to make any more dots.

B.Because Aunt Cindy wanted her to help somewhere else.

C.Because she practised for hours and could make one perfectly.

D.Because she could not make the dots good enough for a cake.

【2】Who designs the cakes on paper?

    A.Aunt Cindy.

    B.Larry.

    C.Assistants

    D.The writer.

【3】Why was the writer glad to have spent a week in her aunt’s shop?

A.She learned how to make a nice cake.

B.She learned how to make good dots on wax paper.

C.She learned the importance of teamwork.

D.She learned art and painting skills.

  • 27、   Richard Dermer is a pizza shop owner. But he is better known for his hobby. As a extraordinary kite collector, people are impressed by kites covering the walls from all over the world when they walk into his pizza shop.

Dermer worked at Hideaway. He bought the pizza shop in 1960. Then, in 1970, his game-partner and manager at Hideaway was the first to market the Japanese version of the game Go in the United States. It was this game that led Dermer to kites, and from there he took off—eventually becoming president of the American Kiefliers Association.

Dermer now has a huge kite collection. He told Collectors Weekly, “Initially, I was a novice, but I enjoyed learning, trying to acquire more about kites. And the more I got into kite festivals and collecting kites, the more I discovered and the deeper the subject became.”

What Dermer’s collection and hobby brings to the United States is an international perspective and history on kite flying. In India, for example, kite flying is a fierce, sometimes violent sport, while in Thailand, kite battles reflect the war of the sexes between men and women. Kites were used in World War II, to distract German planes and for target practice.

When Dermer started stunt kite (特技风筝), it was pretty new. All the kites were triangular, and they all looked the same. But soon with his efforts, that changed. People could see kites of all shapes, sizes and colors flying in the sky. During the 1980s and 1990s kites went through quite a developmental stage where they were getting better and better as new lighter, stronger materials were being developed. Dermer even set up the new rules for judging these stunt kite competitions, which take into account how much control the flier has, and the difficulty of the moves.

    1What is Richard Dermer’s occupation?

A.A plane pilot. B.A food businessman.

C.A kite seller. D.A sales manager.

2What does the underlined word “novice” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Advanced person. B.Learned person.

    C.Inexperienced person. D.Well-known person.

3What can we learn about the kites from paragraph 4?

A.Kites are not popular in the USA. B.Flying kites is illegal in Thailand.

C.Kites played a part in World War II. D.Flying kites is an interesting sport in India.

4With the efforts of Richard Dermer, kites became ________.

    A.portable B.diverse C.available D.delicate

  • 28、Some plants get so hungry that they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What’s more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they’re found on every continent except Antarctica.

You’ve probably seen a Venus’ flytrap. It’s often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets. A small plant, it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (茎) are specially modified leaves that act like traps. Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shuts. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch.

The Venus flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice, the editor of the International carnivorous (食肉的) Plant Society’ s Newsletter. Note: Despite any science-fiction stories you might have read, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.

Dr. Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all four of the following “attract, kill, digest, and absorb” some from of insects, including flies, butterflies, and moths. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants -- well, most of the time.

All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis (光合作用). Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes “meat-eating” plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason: nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can’t obtain any other way. While almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil, “meat-eating” plants can’t. They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they’ve come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to “meat-eating” plants. Never fertilize them! But don’t worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they’ll grow very slowly.

B.Carnivorous plants can grow in nutrient-poor soil

C.Carnivorous plants will die if they cannot catch any insects

D.Carnivorous plants can get nitrogen from nutrient-rich soil

  • 29、The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.

I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet were turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.

The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we’d slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself breathing for her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I prayed that she wouldn’t.

Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with sheer determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet, standing straight and proud waited a man. He was holding one end of a ribbon tied to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the ribbon fluttering (飘动) behind her.

I don’t know this woman’s name, but that day she became a part of my life — a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

【1】What words can best describe the woman?

    A.Proud and determined.

    B.Strong-willed and honorable.

    C.Modest and courageous.

    D.Diligent and considerate.

【2】What does the underlined word “crippled” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Disabled.

    B.Healthy.

    C.Perfect.

    D.Strong.

【3】What has the author learnt from the woman?

A.Don’t depend on others when facing hardships.

B.Nothing is too tough to accomplish if one is brave enough.

C.The disabled can also run a marathon despite their walking difficulty.

D.It’s not winning but finishing the thing we start that really matters.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

    A.A Humorous Stranger.

    B.An Unforgettable Job.

    C.The Last Runner.

    D.The Annual Marathon.

The more thought you put into a present, the more likely you are to stray from buying what the person you're buying the present for actually wants.

“Gift givers focus on what people are like instead of what people actually would like,” said Steffel. “And it's most pronounced when they're shopping for people they are close to.”

In other words, people let their gift-giving egos (自我)get ________ the way of great presents. Especially when the recipient is someone they want to show they know really well.

Fortunately, the answer to our ________ on guessing what people want is simple: stop it.

“People want ________ it is they happen to want in the moment, which can be very specific,” Steffel said. “You are much better off ________ people what they want.”

There is another helpful ________ of thumb. Buy gifts that can be used more broadly. People prefer gift cards to actual gifts, and cash to ________. Here is an example. ________ you have a friend, and your friend really likes margarita (玛格丽特鸡尾酒).You might think of buying that friend a margarita-maker.

But a margarita-maker, ________ it speaks to a specific quality in that friend, is actually a pretty ________ present. Better yet? Give the friend enough cash to buy the device, ________ it, and then accept the reality that they are probably going to buy something else they want much more.

When Dylan was just seven years old, he moved to the United States with his mother, Khadine, and his twin younger brothers. The family hoped that their new home would allow them to start over and find success. However, their dream didn’t work out exactly as they imagined it would.

Life as a single mother supporting three kids is incredibly difficult, but Khadine had a particularly difficult time after her twin sons had been diagnosed with serious heart conditions. As a result, the boys suffered from dangerous symptoms and required 24-hour care. As Khadine had to work three jobs to support her family financially, it became Dylan’s responsibility to look after his young brothers. To relieve Mom’s stress, Dylan also found a part-time job at a recreation center.

While Dylan never considered his family to be a burden to him, seeing his mother and brothers become vulnerable (脆弱的) made him determined to plan his future out correctly. He believed education was the only way out of their struggle, so he made a promise to his mother that he would be the first one in the family to go to college.

For that promise, Dylan made use of each and every minute to study while taking care of his brothers. He soon became an honor student at Henry High School and took several advanced classes to keep his grades up. The College of New Jersey was his top choice. He was determined to put that admission letter in his mother’s hands.

However, weeks before Dylan’s college entrance exam, both his family and his determination were tested again when Khadine fell ill and was unable to work for a while. Soon, the bills became unmanageable and the landlord evicted (驱逐) Dylan’s family after Khadine couldn’t pay the rent. The family had no choice but to live in the shelter. The place wasn’t an ideal place to study. It was often noisy and crowded, and the lights would go out at a certain time after 11 p.m.

    1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
