  • 27、   A new report suggests that young people are aware of their parents drinking and it may well have an impact on their relationship with alcohol. How much you drink, how often you say, 'Ah, that's nice,' while imbibing and whether you use alcohol as a reward can all encourage adolescents to drink, according to a report last week from the Institute of Alcohol Studies.

Parents often assume their children don’t notice their drinking, but they do Children can also tell the difference in levels of being drunk, and one in five said they had been embarrassed by their parents' drinking, while others said that parents had forgotten their bedtime or argued with them more than usual.

If you have a warm parenting style, but clear expectations for your children's behavior, this can protect your children from drinking. The report has clear guide-lines for parents: don't glamorize (美化) alcohol, always talk about its risks as part of a conversation about alcohol and don't talk about feeling sick because your children will then think it's normal to throw up and have a headache after a drinking session.

But according to Prof Ingeborg RosSow, who studied parental drinking three years ago, the evidence isn't strong enough for any sort of recommendation: 'Despite numerous research findings on this topic, there is rather little we know about causal effects of parental drinking and parenting behaviour on children's alcohol use. ' And that's the truthit's an association, not evidence of proof (证据). Alcohol marketing, peer (同龄人) pressure and the genes that influence how much you drink are also in play. But, even so, parents who drink in front of their children could make their younger children feel unsafe and their older ones embarrassed. So treat parenting like drivingdon't go over the limit.

1What does the underlined word 'imbibing' in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Taking exercise. B.Writing a report.

    C.Giving a reward. D.Drinking alcohol.

2What are parents advised to do according to the report?

    A.Give up drinking alcohol.

    B.Limit their children’s alcohol use.

C.Let their children know the danger of alcohol.

D.Avoid talking about alcohol with their children.

3What can be learned from RosSow's words?

A.Peer pressure is strong among children.

B.Alcohol marketing is going over the limit.

C.It is inspiring that more parents are giving up alcohol.

D.It is unclear whether parents drinking leads to children's alcohol use.

  • 28、   Researchers have discovered a new bacterium that feeds on polyurethane, a kind of plastic that is difficult to recycle or destroy. Scientists say the discovery could help reduce a flood of hard — to — recycle plastics that are ending up in the world's landfills(垃圾填埋地) and polluting oceans.

A team from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, found the new type of soil bacteria. It was spotted in an area that contained a large amount of plastic waste. The team discovered the bacteria were feeding on polyurethane diol, which was widely used in many different products.

One problem is that recycling polyurethane requires a lot of energy. The plastic material does not melt when heated. Most polyurethane-based products end up in landfills, where they can release dangerous chemicals. The team round that the bacterium can produce enzymes(酶)that eat away polyurethane. This would make it possible to break down the material in the environment. The results were recently reported in a study in the publication Frontiers in Microbiology. Hermann Heipieper helped write the report. He said in a statement the finding “represents an important step in being able to reuse polyurethane products.”

German study noted that plastic-eating bacteria could be easily controlled and produced for industrial use. The researchers said the next step is to find more information about the bacterial enzymes that can break down polyurethane.

Scientist Douglas Rader wrote about the issue in a 2018 article for the Environmental Defense Fund. He said much more study should be carried out to learn about the complex relationships between bacteria and marine ecosystems. “Such research is needed before we can take action such as putting plastic-eating bacteria into the ocean,” Rader wrote.

1What is the problem about polyurethane?

A.It seems difficult to transport when it goes to landfills.

B.It affects the quality of plastic products if widely used.

C.It melts easily when exposed to the sun for a long time.

D.It pollutes the environment unless recycled or destroyed.

2What do we know about the new type of bacteria from the text?

A.It can produce harmful chemicals. B.It can gradually destroy polyurethane.

C.It is very hard to discover and control. D.It is very likely to increase plastic waste.

3What is Douglas Rader's attitude towards the future use of the new bacterium?

    A.Doubtful. B.Disapproval.

    C.Cautious. D.Enthusiastic.

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Plastic-eating Bacteria B.Plastic Waste — A Big Problem

    C.Plastic and Ocean D.Polyurethane — A Bacteria killer

  • 29、   Years ago, I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Los Angeles, handing out food. Once I got talking with Albert., a tall and skinny young guy in line. He said he liked my socks. “Want to see mine?” he joked, lifting his leg. He was barefoot. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach.

The next day, after work, I stopped at Ross and filled up my truck with socks. The following early morning, I drove over to Santa Monica's Palisades Park, which is a common destination for homeless people.

I took one of the bags from my trunk. It was still dark out. I headed for a group of three men, standing around a tree, probably using it as a windbreaker. Two were asleep under heavy blankets, and the third was digging through his collection. As I walked toward him, he watched me, perhaps questioning my motives. “I thought you guys might need some fresh new socks,” I said, handing him a pair. He looked confused at first but took them and said, “Thank you.” I gave him two more pairs for his friends.

I moved on. An hour later, I had given out all the socks. Most people were sleeping, and I felt like Santa. I knew that when they wake up they would find a very meaningful present.

That was nine years ago. Every week I’ll hand out as many socks as I can. If I’m on vacation or on a business trip for more than a week, I bring a bag of socks with me and hand them out to the homeless on the streets in other states and countries.

It’s extremely satisfying to operate “under the radar(雷达)” to help make some people’s lives a little bit easier. Part of me hopes to see Albert out there one of these days, but even if I don’t, I like to think one of the pairs will find him.

1What does the underlined part in Paragraph I most probably mean?

    A.Homesick. B.Sorry.

    C.Regretful. D.Embarrassed.

    2What is Ross most probably?

    A.A garage. B.A public park.

    C.A store. D.A homeless shelter.

3What made the author feel especially satisfied with giving out socks?

A.Playing Santa in public. B.Making weekends as holidays.

C.Spending early morning at a park. D.Helping others silently.

4Which of the following could be the best title?

A.Helping the Homeless in an Unexpected Way.

B.The Easy Way Out of Helping the Poor.

C.A Unique Experience at a Homeless Shelter.

    D.Satisfactory Return from Kindness.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

We have a pit bull(比特犬). We found him a few weeks ago, walking along the road in a rural area. He tried jumping on cars, and we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby, so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again, trying to get folks to stop for him. When he saw us, he lay down in the middle of the road, so we were unable to get around him.

We stopped the car and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out if anyone was around from whom he was separated. It didn’t appear so. Then, we took a good look at the dog. He had no collar and he was really thin. We decided he was deserted.

My husband sad, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all. The only thing we were in danger of was getting licked to death. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanking us for picking him up.

The dog was clearly on the road for some time, He was extremely under weight. He was covered in scars and new wounds. We have guessed that some of the scars were from when he was on the road. We thought of possible fights with coyotes(土狼), but he also looked as though he was used to fighting other dogs. We figured his incredibly sweet personality was the reason why he was deserted. He can’t have been a good fighting dog.

Therefore, we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks and he gained over twenty pounds.

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert cried out, "A fight! Let’s go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go home quietly and not meddle with(干涉) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also my parents are expecting to have dinner with me together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me."

"You are a coward," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ sneer(嘲笑) and continued to go to school and study as usual. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him any more. Instead, he enjoyed playing with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to a river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did not even try to help him.
