26、 Recently, Kevin Smith, the director of Clerks and Chasing Amy, got kicked off of a Southwestern Airlines flight for being too fat. He used the social media tool Twitter to take pictures of himself in a seat, and criticized the airline’s decision. In reality, most airlines have had policies for “customers of size” for the past 25 years, but few airlines have used these rules because they don’t want the negative publicity.
While it is very politically incorrect to look down on people because of their age, sex, race, or religion, many people believe that obese people are discriminated(歧视) against all the time. For an extremely large person, it is very difficult to get around on normal-sized public transportation, such as buses or subways. Flying is not much easier because the seats are small even for a regular person, and airlines have been squeezing as many people as they can onto flights.
With the combination of September 11 terrorist attack and the economic downturn, the airline business hasn’t been doing very well. This means that airlines are trying to squeeze every dollar out of flyers. Recently, they started charging fees for overweight luggage and extra carry-on bags. It makes sense financially to make an overweight person purchase two tickets if they can’t fit into one seat, but airlines have to be cautious when dealing with this problem. Usually, someone that is heavy is already embarrassed about their weight, and making them pay extra can violate(侵犯)their rights.
Many people believe that those who are overweight have a lack of willpower and should be treated accordingly. In fact, there are many diseases that cause people to be overweight. Discriminating against someone because they are overweight is morally wrong. For airlines to show prejudice against anyone is bad for business.
In conclusion, airlines should consider the special needs of their customers to earn repeat business. If they force obese passengers to buy two tickets for one flight, they not only discriminate them, but they may lose a lot of business as well.
【1】Why is the director mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To promote his movies. B.To ask him to lose weight.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To complain about the airline.
【2】Why do airlines tend to charge obese passengers two tickets?
A.Because they want them to lose weight.
B.Because they are facing financial problems.
C.Because they need to load more luggage and bags.
D.Because they prefer to protect regular passengers’ rights.
【3】What is the author’s opinion?
A.Overweight people deserve to be charged more.
B.Overweight people should have a stronger willpower.
C.It’s a good idea for airlines to charge less for a second ticket.
D.It’s bad practice for airlines to discriminate against obese people.
27、 Young sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.
Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start tracking the "sun" again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day, or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone, called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The "dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures (成熟) and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
"Bees like warm flowers." Hanner said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day." he said "We're currently testing this idea."
【1】Why did Harmer do the experiment on sunflowers?
A. To see how sunflowers grow up
B. To study why sunflowers track the sun.
C. To show what sunflowers' genes are.
D. To check if sunflowers swing in cloudy days.

28、Apps such as Snapchat already give users the ability to add dog ears, colorful hats and other images onto smart phone photos. Virtual(虚拟的)mirrors are a little different. They are designed to let users see what they would look like wearing something that they might want to buy, such as eyeglasses and earrings.
A smart mirror is an app that turns the screen of a smart phone or other mobile device (装置) into a mirror, using its camera. As users look at the image(影像), the app will make it appear as if they are wearing the object. These smart mirror Apps are becoming popular among retail(零售的))businesses, which want to get people into their stores.
Peter Johnson is with FaceCake Marketing Technologies. He said, “Virtual try-on off the ability to try on a great many objects, many more than they would be able to try on if were no such kind of App.” Recently, Johnson showed how an app called Dangle works. It lets store customers try on different earrings(耳环)without touching a single pair Dangle can be used on a computer. It uses the app's facial recognition technology to make it appear as if the user is wearing earrings. The earrings in the image appear almost real.
With Dangle, retailers can show customers all of their earrings in a short period of time---something almost impossible without technology. There are other good reasons to use the app. Trying-on goods with the virtual mirror means there is nothing to damage, lose or at risk of being stolen.
Alec Gefrides is with the American technology company Intel. “We always hear about the big store closings,” said Gefrides. “But Intel sees technology becoming more important in providing customers with a better experience.”
【1】What is a virtual mirror?

C. The function and benefits of smart mirrors.
D. The importance of customers’ real experience.
29、 2020 is a leap year, and as we all know leap years happen every four years, right? Wrong. That extra day in February is designed to keep the earth in sync (同步的) with the seasonal year. But, what you might not realize is that the maths isn’t that simple and occasionally we have to wait eight years.
The method behind calculating when leap years occur might be a bit more complicated than you think. Way back in 1582 the calendar we now use was first applied. The Gregorian calendar was named after the authority at the time, Gregory XIV. The people who created it realized it wasn’t perfect to just add an extra day every four years.
Here’s where the maths comes in. A day, of course, is measured by the amount of time it takes for the earth to complete one full cycle on its axis (轴). A year is the number of days it takes the earth to orbit the sun, which most people assume is 365. However, the earth actually takes just under 365 and a quarter days to complete one full revolve (旋转) around the sun.
So, every four years we get an extra day, which falls on the 29th February. However, as mentioned earlier, it is in fact just under a quarter of a day. So, by rounding it up (四舍五入), we put the calendar out of sync again—which means that after a while we have too many days.
That imbalance has to be dealt with again, otherwise after 400 years you’d end up with three extra days. So back in 1582, they realized that every turn of a century should skip their extra day to remove those three extra days. This is why the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 weren’t leap years. But wait, there’s more. The year 2000, the millennium, was a leap year. That’s because over a period of four hundred years we only need to remove three days. So, every 400 years the turn of the century is a leap year.
The next time you hear someone saying “leap years happen every four years”, you can tell them why they’re wrong.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 【1】 into the hand?
Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 【2】. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 【3】. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.
The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 【4】 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 【5】 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.
The technology could 【6】 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 【7】 available space.
In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 【8】 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?
According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 【9】. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 【10】 the majority of people.
But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.
Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

Before a child starts school, his or her main role models are his or her parent or caregiver. Parents or caregivers with high self-esteem( 自尊) typically model this to the children, who will gradually pick up these ideas. Those who are influenced by negativity(否定性,消极态度), even if the negativity is not towards them, will often take the same way of thinking, leading to low self-esteem in childhood.
Continual praise for a child’s achievements plays a large part in a child’s view of himself or herself. Praising a child for acting as expected or something good often encourages him or her to repeat the same action and forms a sense of self-worth. Empty praise, however, can have the opposite(相反的)effect. A child who is praised for anything will stop believing the words, and the empty praise will have little effect on self-esteem in childhood or possibly a negative effect.
Providing a child with responsibilities based on his or her abilities is also important in the development of self-esteem in childhood. Making a child feel like a helpful member of a family or group, whether at home or school, helps to form a higher sense of confidence in his or her abilities. However, giving a child unfit responsibilities or tasks can do no good to the development of high self-esteem in childhood.
Each person has strengths and weaknesses. A child can build up his or her confidence level when he/she is encouraged to take part in activities ,which can provide him or her with chances to work on weaknesses(缺点) in a helpful environment . Children who are given the opportunities to use their unique skills to help others or improve themselves have higher self-esteem than those who are not given the same chances or who are pushed into activities that they do not enjoy or do not have an ability to do.

Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. An increasing number of people also report turning to social media for information.
Now, there is a new technology that could greatly change the way we get the news: computer-created news readers. Recently, China launched what it called the worlds first artificial intelligence, or AI news presenters.
The news readers, supported by machine learning technology, are based on two real-life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English, the other, in Mandarin Chinese. Report said machine learning was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. Similar technology has been used to create video products known as “deepfake” videos. A deepfake is a video that looks real, but was electronically changed. Such videos can make people appear to say things they never said.
It's said that the AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they “can work 24 hours a day” on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even promised to “work tirelessly” to keep people informed. Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China’s latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis.
Some companies have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations. Britain’s BBC recently released a video that used machine learning to make it look like one of its news readers speaking different languages. The London-based company that developed the system says its goal is to “remove the language barrier” for many different kinds of video across the internet. Also, Amazon is working on Alexa smart speaker system to create a special news reader voice. Amazon is reportedly preparing to launch Alexas news reader voice in the near future.
