26、 Many of us like cooking but never have much time for it. Helen Fry’s new book Quick Cooking has been specially written for busy people. It has over 1,000 recipes, from the famous Spanish gazpacho to Swedish smorgasbord. The book is well written and the photographs and drawings are clear. (They are like those in the excellent little Quick Dressmaking and Quick Gardening.) The book has a strong plastic cover. It is easy to find your way around it too. And busy people, notice this! Mrs Fry tells you how much time you need in order to get each dish ready.
Quick Cooking has 4 parts, one for each season. This helps you to use fresh fruit and vegetables when they are cheaper — and, of course, better. There are a lot of exciting ideas from foreign countries, and most of the recipes are easy to follow. You take something simple like a chicken or some cheese, and make an unusual dish out of it. For example, there are no fewer than 40 recipes for eggs! Mrs Fry does not plan complete meals for the “quick book”. The beginners will have to find out a lot of things for himself — or herself. But this ought not to be difficult with such a good book. I wanted to try many of the recipes as soon as I read them. For people with little spare time, Helen Fry’s Quick Cooking is excellent value.
【1】Helen Fry’s book is called Quick Cooking because ________.
A. you can cook all the dishes in it quickly

C. there are quite a few “quick books” for busy people
D. beginners are advised to start making meals out of the cheapest materials
27、Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: “Our Study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see一and guide whether we see fear.”
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s feeling of fear.
“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr Garfinkel said.
“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”
【1】What is the finding of the study?
A.One’s heart affects how he feels fear.
B.Fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.
C.Fear has something to do with one’s health.
D.One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.

28、 Food is necessary for offering energy to our bodies, but sometimes we buy too much of it at the store. When your food starts to go bad, there are many other ways you can still make use of it instead of throwing it away.
Before throwing away old bananas, you can use the peels (皮) to shine up metals and leathers. Press the peel against the surface, move it backwards and forwards and then polish clean it with an old cloth. Banana meat is also good for reducing wrinkles. Put a bit on those trouble spots, let it sit for a while, and then wash it off, and your wrinkles will go away. Lemons are great for lightening skin and hair. If you have trouble with some skin diseases, like red spots on your face, put a bit of fresh lemon juice on them and leave it overnight. You’ll notice a difference in the morning. Apples will help ripen (使成熟) tomatoes quickly when they are placed together in a paper bag, and orange peels are great fire starters for your next backyard campfire party.
If your dog or cat brings home fleas, using salt is a great way to get rid of them around the house. Just pour salt into the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器). Let it sit, then vacuum up the fleas. The salt can kill the fleas. Be sure to throw away the vacuum bag or empty the vacuum bin immediately, or some of the fleas can climb out
Beer is a great hair lightener. If you are out of lemons, try dipping your hair in beer before going outside. Just don’t forget to wash it out afterwards. Milk is great for removing dirty marks, especially if it is some type of ink.
As you can see, there are many other uses for everyday foods around the house. So next time, before throwing food away thinking it is of no use, stop for a moment and think about all their uses talked about here.
【1】How many ways we make use fruit are talked about in the passage?

29、 FORTY-EIGHT HOURS after the Brazilian government banned the burning of the Amazon rainforest, almost 4,000 new fires were spotted by the satellites of the National Space Research Institute. The burning of the Amazon seemed terrifying enough. It is even more painful to learn that most of these fires are deliberately set.
The situation in the Amazon has occasionally been brought up over the past few years as we have seen a gradual increase in forest fires worldwide. Recently, it has become a much more hotly contested topic as mainstream news outlets and social media users alike have begun taking up the cause. The phenomenon has even escalated (升级) to the point where certain social media users are posting questionable photos to draw attention. However, it does not change the fact that the crisis is very real and very serious.
Wildfires in regions with dry forests like California and Australia have increased due to climate change, which some world leaders still deny is a man-made problem. The fires in the Amazon rainforest, however, are undeniably caused by people. The rainforest is a wet place and does not catch fire easily, so natural forest fires are uncommon. This means that the 70,000 plus fires in the Amazon this year are mostly the result of human activity. They are started by farmers looking to expand farmland, or companies looking to develop natural resources from the forest. Why do they do this? Money.
Since the new Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, took office in January of this year, there has been an 84 percent increase in the number of fires in the Amazon, and the year is not even over yet. While the world was mourning (感到痛心), the president didn't take any immediate action to prevent the destruction from expanding. It was only weeks later, when public angry reaction forced him to act; that he finally sent in firefighters to try to put out the fires.
To quote Alanis Obomsawin, a firm environmentalist,“When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you cannot eat money.”
【1】What is happening to the Amazon rainforest?
A.It is being preserved by global media.
B.It is being damaged by human activity.
C.It is being explored for green purposes.
D.It is being threatened by climate change.
【2】What is the author's attitude to Jair Bolsonaro, the new president of Brazil?
A.Skeptical.
B.Reserved.
C.Critical.
D.Favorable.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author thinks it urgent to conserve the Amazon rainforest.
B.The burning of the rainforest has drawn the attention of experts.
C.It is never too late to take measures to protect natural forests.
D.Money in bank accounts is no guarantee of our fulfilling life.

And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.
We have such similar tastes in books and music 【7】 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.
I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 【8】 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.
We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest of men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for.
However, instead of finding the holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.
The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come hack in two hours' time.
"However, I want to ask you a favor," he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. "While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill(溢出).
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
"So," asked the wise man, "did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?"
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.
"So, go hack and see the wonders of my world," said the wise man. "You can’t trust a man if you don't know his house.
